Reminding myself about how to lose weight
Back in 2019, I went from 95kg to about 82 in four months. I got
reasonably lean, though not quite 18 year old me lean . I was highly
motivated then, as I’d just been told I had type2 diabetes, and my
reading had told me shifting some weight would help me out. I also went
pretty brutal on minimising carbs, and (almost) eradicating sugar from
my diet. For various reasons*, even though I’ve needed to, lately I
haven’t been able to stomach starting the process of weight loss. Til
now. Now I’m back on the horse, so I’m reminding myself of what I need
to bear in mind
1. You’re gonna be hungry
2. Know that it will suck at times
3. Aim for consistency
4. Hunger is a sign you’re doing the right thing
5. Your future self will thank you
6. As you get older, it gets harder to shift, do it now
7. Carbs and sugar can mess up your balance and derail you
8. You’ve quit booze this time so in theory it should be easier
9. Lift weights, do hill sprints, walk a lot, count calories
10. Drink coffee, espresso or long black. Macchiato when you want a
treat
11. Try and simplify your life in other areas
12. You’re gonna need a plan for once the kids are in bed. A rule of no
eating is probably the easiest.
Back then my diet was lots of lean protein (chicken, salmon, mackerel )
with large amounts of green vegetables. Eating like a ruminant served me
well: think like a cow.
This time I’ve got a lot of excess fat from my time on insulin, which
I’ve recently tapered off. Insulin lowers your sugar (partly) by storing
it as fat.
The effect is quite something to behold: for me I got an (even bigger)
paunch within 24 hours. Periodically - thanks to illness or lack of
mobility - I’ve had to up the dose, and it always shows. Anyway, I’m off
it, hopefully for a long long time.
