Some context

  • Hello, I’m James Pallister, I’m a 39 year old dad of two. Raised in the north east of England, live down south. *

In the last ten years, in my work life, I’ve mainly done transformation projects. And in the past few years I’ve been through some transformational things myself, which I’m still trying to get my head round. Some of these feel relevant to blokes of a certain age, or indeed anyone interested in health or considering how to spend their life.

I got diagnosed with T2 diabetes in 2018, which prompted me to massively reconsider my diet and lose almost 15kg.

Then in 2021 three big things happened.

  1. I started doing therapy. Prompted largely by blowups with the kids.

  2. In the summer, the GP told me I needed a liver ultrasound. I stopped drinking. Then I needed a CT scan. Then a biopsy. 6 weeks off the booze turned into not drinking permanently.

  3. In late November the biopsy came back: I was told I had an aggressive’ HCC tumour on my liver, that fortunately they could cut it out, and they’d do it about two weeks time, after I’d quarantined

I had surgery 13 December 2021, then had a bunch of complications that cleared up around September. The tumour turned out to be less aggressive than they thought. They cut it out with good margins’. At the moment, I’m in the clear.

On this blog I’ll be telling the stories from that period. And writing more generally about food, masculinity, booze, exercise and healing. I might intersperse it with some more work focussed posts.

This isn’t content marketing, there’s no downloadable help sheet in exchange for your email, I don’t have a line of supplements to sell. It’s by and large writing to make sense of things, and hopefully to provide something entertaining or useful out of it all.

I grew up in the north east of England, which feels a relevant part of my story.

Work stuff

For work I do ghostwriting, content strategy, and help digital teams explain their work and build better products, most often in a transformation setting. If you want to hire me, here’s some more information and here.
